它是什麼，在皂中有何表現
檀香精油是以蒸氣蒸餾印度檀香（Santalum album）的心材製成（ISO 3518）。它的氣味柔和、帶奶香和木質調，而且和廣藿香一樣會越陳越好（Cavitch）。
在皂中它是後調（Cable；Fisher），能把複方穩住，但很少有皂友捨得用：Grosso 說它非常昂貴，也提到合成檀香之所以受歡迎，部分原因是為了避免讓這種樹更加瀕危。Failor 把它用在玫瑰和大地調的複方中。本頁的 IFRA 數值是上限。
Santalum album 被 IUCN 列為易危物種。印度曾供應九成的檀香精油，直到產量減少約三分之二，拍賣價格上漲超過六倍（Chavan 等人）。假貨很常見：在一項檢測中，六種市售精油沒有一種符合 ISO 標準，其中三種是阿米香樹，一種毫不相干的西印度木材（Kucharska 等人）。要問清楚樹種和來源。
