European Commission (Official Journal of the European Union L 85, 21.3.2014, p. 13) — Commission Implementing Decision of 19 March 2014 authorising the placing on the market of coriander seed oil as a novel food ingredient under Regulation (EC) No 258/97 (2014/155/EU), Annex: Specification of coriander seed oil · documento fechado el 2014-03-19 · consultado el 2026-09-24

Official Journal text read on EUR-Lex. The Decision rests on the EFSA Scientific Opinion on the safety of coriander seed oil as a novel food ingredient (EFSA Journal 2013;11(10):3422), which was not opened. The specification is a regulatory purity standard for the authorised ingredient (applicant Nestec Ltd).

Table 1 fatty acid profile of coriander vegetable oil; Table 2 sterols. Cross-check in notes only.

THIS IS THE FIXED OIL of the seeds (a triglyceride oil), not coriander essential oil; CosIng keeps them apart (Coriandrum Sativum Seed Oil = 'the fixed oil obtained from the seeds', Coriandrum Sativum Fruit Oil = 'the volatile oil obtained from the dried fruit'). All figures are the specification in the Annex to Commission Implementing Decision 2014/155/EU, which authorised coriander seed oil as a novel food ingredient: composition of fatty acids - palmitic acid (C16:0) 2-5 %, stearic acid (C18:0) < 1,5 %, PETROSELINIC ACID (cis-C18:1(n-12)) 60-75 %, oleic acid (cis-C18:1 (n-9)) 8-15 %, linoleic acid (C18:2) 12-19 %, alpha-linolenic acid (C18:3) < 1,0 %, trans fatty acids not more than 1 %; refractive index (20 C) 1,466-1,474; acid value not more than 0,6 mg KOH/g; peroxide value not more than 5 meq/kg; iodine value 88-102 units; saponification value 186-198 mg KOH/g; unsaponifiable matter not more than 15 g/kg (stored as 1.5 %). The '<' limits are stored as max. PETROSELINIC ACID HAS NO KEY IN THIS SCHEMA and is 60-75 % of the fatty acids, so the keyed acids cover only about a third of the oil and the validator reports a low profile total; the gap is representational, not a missing measurement. Petroselinic acid is an 18-carbon monounsaturated acid with the same molar mass as oleic acid, so it takes exactly as much lye as oleic acid: the published saponification value (186-198) already includes it, and the keyed acids alone imply about 192, in agreement. The soap-quality numbers, however, will leave out two-thirds of the oil until the schema has a key for it (it would count as conditioning, like oleic). Measured cross-check, not merged: Uitterhaegen et al. 2016 (Molecules 21:1202, Table 1, French coriander oil) found C6:0 0.1, C16:0 2.9, C16:1 0.4, C18:1 trans 0.7, C18:0 < 0.1, C18:1 n-12 (petroselinic) 72.6, C18:1 n-9 6.0, C18:1 n-7 1.2, C18:2 13.8, C18:3 0.2, C20:0 0.1, C20:1 0.2 % (identified 98.3 %); its oleic acid is below the specification's 8 % floor, everything else is inside it, and it reports phytosterols 6.68 g/kg. The Decision's identification line gives CAS 8008-52-4, a number CosIng also gives for the volatile fruit oil; the CAS and EC numbers stored here are the ones CosIng gives for the fixed-oil INCI name. Melting point not specified.
