Erucic acid is cis-13-docosenoic acid, C22:1, the characteristic acid of high-erucic rapeseed, mustard and crambe oils. Sold on its own it is a fine chemical rather than an oleochemical cut, and no producer checked for this record publishes a full specification for it: Oleon's RADIACID range has no erucic grade (its high-erucic rapeseed product, RADIACID 0075, is described as a hydrogenated fatty acid, so its erucic acid has been turned into behenic); NOF's English product pages list no fatty-acid grades; the product list in Croda Industrial Specialties' site map has no erucic acid; KLK OLEO's site search returns nothing for it; Kao's product search is script-driven and could not be queried; TCI's page for cis-13-docosenoic acid (D0965) refused the download (HTTP 403). What is published, and what this record holds: Thermo Scientific Chemicals' Erucic acid, tech. 90% (catalogue L08685, formerly Alfa Aesar) specifies Assay (Silylated GC) > 88.0 %, appearance white to pale yellow, form fused solid, clear as melt; CAS 112-86-7, C22H42O2, 338.576 g/mol. That assay is the only composition figure for the technical grade, so the profile is erucic min 88 and nothing else: the balance of up to 12 % is not itemised by the producer and is not guessed at here. Larodan's research-grade 13(Z)-docosenoic acid (product 10-2201) is >99 % pure, molecular weight 338.57, lipid number C22:1, a solid stored in the freezer; it sits inside the same min-88 statement and shows how pure the acid can be bought. No saponification value, acid value or iodine value is published for either grade, so sapKohMgPerG and iodineValue are null, and because the technical grade's profile sums to only 88 % the build will not derive one from it either (it needs 95 %). On the arithmetic, which is arithmetic and not a measurement: a free fatty acid takes one KOH per molecule, so pure erucic acid (M 338.57) is 56106 / 338.57 = 165.7 mg KOH/g, against 56106 / 282.46 = 198.6 for oleic acid, about a sixth less lye per gram; and its one double bond gives a theoretical iodine value of 2 x 126.90 / 338.57 x 100 = 75.0 g I2/100 g. The technical grade's unstated 12 % will move the real lye figure off 165.7 in a direction nobody has published, so for a batch that matters ask the supplier for the lot's acid value. meltingPointC is null: Thermo's specification table gives no melting point and Larodan gives only the physical state. unsaponifiablePercent is null: neither producer publishes it. No source consulted prints an INCI name; the INCI name, CAS and EC numbers are CosIng's entry for Erucic Acid, and CosIng lists no sodium or potassium erucate. In soap, erucic acid is a long monounsaturated chain whose main consequence for a maker is the lower lye demand, the same effect that makes high-erucic rapeseed oil (rapeseed-oil.json) saponify lower than canola.
