Table 2 physico-chemical characteristics (refractive index, iodine value, saponification value, unsaponifiable matter, FFA, acid value, peroxide value, oxidative stability, AOCS 1993 methods); Table 3 fatty-acid composition by GLC with SFA/MUFA/PUFA subtotals. Read from the journal's PDF.

Physicochemical, Fatty Acid and Antioxidant Properties of Passion Fruit (Passiflora Species) Seed Oil. Pak. J. Nutr. 2019, 18(5), 421-429 (doi 10.3923/pjn.2019.421.429) · documento datato 2019 · consultato il 2026-09-21

Abstract read on the journal's article page; the PDF's font encoding defeated text extraction, so only the abstract figures are used. Iodine value 124.67-131.00 g I2/100 g and peroxide value 1.43-3.23 meq/kg across the Passiflora taxa sampled, oil 24-30 % of seed, unsaturated fatty acids above 80 %. Source of the iodineValue min/max only.

Every field except the iodine min/max comes from Malacrida and Jorge 2012 (Braz. Arch. Biol. Technol. 55(1):127-134), crude oil Soxhlet-extracted with petroleum ether from the seed of ripe yellow passion fruit (Passiflora edulis f. flavicarpa) bought in Sao Jose do Rio Preto, Brazil; five harvest batches homogenised, three replicates, AOCS methods. Table 2: saponification value 190.7 +/- 2.76 mg KOH/g, iodine value 128.0 +/- 0.75 g I2/100 g, unsaponifiable matter 1.51 +/- 0.08 %, refractive index 1.4682 at 40 C, free fatty acids 1.18 %, acid value 2.35 mg KOH/g, peroxide value 1.46 meq/kg, Rancimat induction 7.89 h at 100 C, oil yield 30.39 % of the seed. A TRANSCRIPTION TRAP worth recording: in the published PDF, Table 3 has its label column and its value column out of step by one row from 'margaric' downwards, so read naively it makes the oil 73 % alpha-linolenic and 14 % linoleic. The correct pairing is fixed twice over - by the table's own subtotals and by the paper's abstract. Stored as palmitic 9.73, palmitoleic 0.11, stearic 2.58, oleic 13.83, linoleic 73.14, alpha-linolenic 0.41, arachidic 0.10, eicosenoic 0.10 %, with myristic, margaric and behenic printed as traces; these give SFA 12.41, MUFA 14.04 and PUFA 73.55, which are exactly the totals the table prints, and the abstract independently states linoleic 73.14 % and oleic 13.83 %. The identified acids total 100.00 %. What that means in a pot: this is a higher-linoleic oil than grapeseed, so use it in small proportions, expect a soft bar and a short shelf life on the finished soap, and do not lean on it for hardness. The published saponification value and the recorded composition agree to within 1 %. Iodine min/max 124.67-131.00 is the spread across the Passiflora taxa in Ramaiya, Bujang and Zakaria 2019 (Pak. J. Nutr. 18(5):421-429), which brackets Malacrida's measured 128.0; only that paper's abstract was reachable, so no other figure from it is used. Melting point not reported (liquid oil). INCI not verified against CosIng in this session, so left null.
